Car hire in Northern Cyprus can be an easy and pleasant experience and is relatively cheap too when compared to some holiday destinations. Rates start as low as £14 per day, making a day trip very affordable or you may even consider hiring a car for a week or more with such affordable rates.
Is car hire in Northern Cyprus essential?
The simple answer is "no" if you have come to North Cyprus to sit around a pool for the duration of your holiday, but this is a beautiful island with many quiet beaches and historic sites just waiting to be explored. Unfortunately public transport is very limited, so if you want to fully enjoy the island and all that it has to offer, car hire in North Cyprus is really essential.
What is driving in North Cyprus like?
If you’re used to hustle and bustle and daily traffic jams, driving in Northern Cyprus will be a real pleasure! With so few cars on the roads you can get from A to B in no time, although you’ll probably prefer to amble along at your own pace which you can certainly do here too.
For visitors from the UK you don’t even have to worry about a left-hand drive car or driving on the right because in North Cyprus we drive on the left as well! The main roads here are well maintained, having been heavily invested in by the government in recent years.
What do I need for car hire in Northern Cyprus?
You can easily hire a car in North Cyprus with a valid driving licence if you are aged over 18. You don’t need to bother with an International Driving Permit here though if you’re coming from the UK please make sure that if you have the newer style licence you bring both the paper part and the photo-card otherwise you could be refused car hire in Northern Cyprus.
As with many countries you will no doubt be offered extra coverages when you hire your car here. Although these often aren’t necessary, please be aware that many car hire companies in Northern Cyprus do not include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) as standard and this is recommended.
Can I take my hire car into South Cyprus?
If you have arranged your car hire in North Cyprus then you cannot take this car into South Cyprus. However, if you landed in South Cyprus and are staying in the north or are coming here for a brief visit you are allowed to bring your South Cyprus hire car into North Cyprus though it does involve buying new insurance cover at the border as your insurance won’t be valid. As an alternative, bear in mind that many Northern Cyprus car hire companies will happily collect you from a southern Cyprus airport.
